Ille-et-Vilaine: when Brittany reveals its hidden treasures
Sightseeing in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer: the jewel of the Emerald Coast
Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, on the stunning Côte d’Armor, is truly a gem to behold, with enchanting fine sandy beaches, secluded coves and picturesque little streets lined with elegant stone houses harking back to the Belle Époque, the prosperous years at the turn of the 20th century. Once home to fisherfolk, today this charming Breton village is the perfect getaway with a whole host of activities.
Hiking enthusiasts will love heading out along the famous Sentier des Douaniers footpath (GR34). At each bend, wild coves and rocky islands spring into view, with breathtaking panoramic views over the Emerald Coast. For sailing fans, Saint-Briac sailing club organises beginner’s sessions and sea outings.
For a more laid-back activity, take the time to enjoy a round of golf at one of the oldest courses in France, the Dinard golf course, with the ocean as its backdrop. And for inquisitive explorers, a walk at low tide as far as Agot Island is a magical experience for the whole family!
Saint-Malo: follow in the footsteps of the privateers of old
Step into the thick of the action at Saint-Malo, the legendary privateers’ city, where each stone of the rampart walls seems to whisper the exploits of these long-ago sailors. Begin your adventure by strolling along the centuries-old ramparts looking out to sea, with sweeping views over the bay, the Fort National and golden beaches below.
For an authentic experience, take to the seas aboard a traditional corsair sailing ship, where you’ll be able to relive the naval battles that have shaped the city’s history. Back on dry land, go for a wander in its old town, Intra-Muros, with its craft shops and museums dedicated to the life of the privateers.
If you’re looking for yet more exhilarating ideas during your stay in Ille-et-Vilaine, don't miss:
- a visit to the Jacques Cartier Museum, dedicated to the explorer who discovered Canada,
- or an excursion to the islands of Grand Bé and Petit Bé, which can be reached at low tide for a moment of calm where time stands still.
After your jam-packed day, treat yourself to a sweet pancake with salted caramel on a sunny café terrace, with the soothing sounds of the waves against the shore to keep you company — an unforgettable away-break awaits in Saint-Malo!
The most beautiful beaches along the Emerald Coast
Steeped in Celtic legends and myths, Brittany’s hidden beaches offer up peaceful havens of natural wilderness. If you want somewhere to relax off the beaten track, here are our top three Emerald Coast beaches:
- Plage du Sillon, in Saint-Malo, is one of the most iconic beaches along this stretch of coast. With three kilometres of fine sand overlooked by its historical villas and famous wooden stakes, acting as a breakwater, this is the perfect spot for a sunset walk when the colours of the horizon blur with those of the ramparts.
- Plage de la Touesse, nestling in Saint-Coulomb. This is a quiet little slice of heaven tucked away behind cliffs and vegetation, ideal for families wanting to go for a peaceful dip in the turquoise waters.
- Plage de l’Anse du Guesclin, near Cancale. For history and nature lovers, this beach provides a rugged and unspoilt setting. Its little island can be reached at low tide, so you’ll be able to walk as far as the fort where the 20th-century French composer Léo Ferré once lived.
